The position is located in the Department of Evolutionary Population Genetics. The research combines classical population genetics, state‑of‑the‑art genomic approaches, and long‑term field studies of wild populations to deepen the understanding of the fundamental evolutionary processes underlying biological diversity and its conservation in times of rapid environmental change.

The current research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) aims to investigate deleterious genetic variation in mongooses.

Your Tasks (95 %)

  • research on the DFG-funded project "Characterisation of the genetic architecture of inbreeding depression in banded mongooses using novel methods for predicting deleterious mutations", and in particular
    • generation and bioinformatic analysis of data for whole genome sequencing of banded mongooses
    • analyses of inbreeding and genetic load
    • analysis of large, individual‑based behavioural and life‑history data sets from a wild population
    • collaboration with external research partners
    • compilation and organisation of metadata
    • writing and publishing manuscripts

Other tasks (5 %)

  • self‑administration tasks in the work area

Your Profile

  • completed scientific university degree (e.g. Master or equivalent) in animal genetics or any related subject
  • knowledge of genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, behavioural research or population biology
  • practical experience of working with next‑generation sequencing (NGS) data
  • advanced programming and bioinformatics skills
  • very good oral and written English language skills
  • independent, responsible and committed approach to work
  • strong organisational and coordination skills
  • cooperative and team‑oriented working style

Preferred experience and skills

  • practical experience and knowledge of data analysis and visualisation in R
  • experience of reproducible workflows
  • experience of analysis and interpretation of whole genome sequencing data
