The Institute of Environmental Planning, Faculty Architecture and Landscape Science, welcomes applications for the following position starting at the earliest possible date: Research Staff Position for Biodiversity and Spatial Analyses in Environmental Planning (salary scale 13 TV-L, 65 %)

The fixed-term position is for a duration of 3 years. It is possible to pursue a doctorate.

Your role

  • As part of the research group Planning for Biodiversity Development, you will investigate new approaches to evaluate and improve current practice to achieve biodiversity no-net-loss or net-gain in Germany and internationally.
  • You will combine scientific methods, digital innovations, and planning approaches in the field of ecosystem and vegetation mapping as an important component of environmental planning for the assessment and accounting of offset and compensation measures for construction-related impacts in the landscape.
  • You will compare implementation across different administrative levels and develop measures to improve efficiency and effectiveness, e.g., through innovative field-based and digital mapping methods supported by drones and spatial analyses.
  • You will work independently and in a structured manner on scientific questions, actively contribute to interdisciplinary research projects, and help implement innovative solutions.
  • You will support the team in supervising students and in the delivery and further development of teaching amounting to three contact hours per week.
  • You will publish scientific results, present your research at conferences, contribute to the scientific networking of the research group, and participate in the preparation of third-party funding proposals.

Who are we looking for?

  • The successful candidate must hold a university level Master’s degree in Environmental Planning, Landscape Ecology, Geography, or a related field.
  • Above-average academic performance is an advantage.
  • Solid understanding of the methodological foundations of vegetation survey and analysis relevant to environmental planning, e.g., evidenced by mapping of biotope types and Habitats Directive habitat types, as well as the application of GIS and remote sensing approaches.
  • High level of initiative and the ability to learn new skills quickly and confidently.
  • Motivation to actively help shape the strategic direction of our institute.
  • Very good command of English (at least B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages); German language skills are an advantage.
