Project Description

As part of an innovative, interdisciplinary research project, we are developing a new technique for generating coherent double pulses at one of the world’s most powerful X-ray laser facilities. This approach combines cutting‑edge laser and accelerator technology with questions from solid‑state physics and biophysical dynamics. The resulting double pulses will be used to study dynamic processes in protein systems, with the aim of gaining time‑resolved insights into fundamental biological mechanisms.

We are hiring:

The Faculty IV: School of Science and Technology, X‑ray science group, in collaboration with the European XFEL and the accelerator division at Hamburg – DESY is seeking to fill the following researcher position as soon as possible :

• 100% = 39,83 hours
• Pay grade 13 TV‑L
• limited fixed‑term 3 Jahre
• Place of employement: Hamburg – DESY / European XFEL

Your Responsibilities:

• Planning and conducting double-pulse experiments at the European XFEL in close collaboration with DESY and the XFEL experimental team
• Evaluation and analysis of complex scattering data from experiments and accelerator systems
• Publication of scientific results in peer‑reviewed journals and presentation at international conferences

Your profile:

• Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Physics or Electrical Engineering with a final grade of “good” or better
• PhD in Physics or Electrical Engineering
• Solid knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
  • Solid‑state physics
  • Accelerator technology
  • X‑ray detectors
• Experience in scientific programming (e.g. Python)
• Willingness to actively collaborate within an international research team Additional desirable qualifications:
• Knowledge in protein dynamics / structural biology
• Experience in laser technology
• Understanding of control systems engineering
