We are seeking an innovator with strong research skills in delivering breakthrough advances in the mathematics and algorithms of LLM training (we are not looking for a data scientist, regardless of seniority or experience)
A curious, reliable, independent thinker, who is confident in applying their solid critical analysis skills to challenging problems
Must have a Masters Degree or Doctorate in Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science (with a strong mathematical background)
plus relevant work experience to demonstrate transferable skills in communication, team working, and time management
Able to work remotely with lightweight supervision, and keen to integrate into our small but select team of highly qualified researchers
Able to challenge the status quo and innovate from the ground up
Must have a fundamental intuitive grasp of the mathematics underlying neural networks, deep learning and large language models; including linear algebra, probabilistic inference, nonlinear optimisation, and information theory - additional skills such as graph theory, and other relevant subjects are advantageous. We would expect a solid understanding in the majority of the following areas:
properties of vector spaces, matrix factorisation, Eigen systems and singular value decomposition, geometry of high-dimensional metric spaces
compression and embedding, entropy and cross-entropy, information gain
Confident in demonstrating the ability to do more than assemble components from existing libraries
Familiarity of the latest developments in large language models, and a solid understanding in the majority of the following:
attention mechanisms
weight sharing and low rank methods
Well versed in developing, implementing and benchmarking novel solutions to complex problems
Must be able to show competence in taking mathematical ideas through to practical implementations in software
Strong Python and PyTorch skills, with the ability to write efficient, well-organised code to our internal standards, and to ensure fitness for purpose with appropriate testing
Basic understanding and experience with version control / git
Bonus: GPU programming in CUDA or Triton experience would be welcome but is not necessary
Able to adopt a work schedule, and attend team meetings to fit UTC to UTC+3 time-zones.
