At the ABB Research Center Germany, you will develop advanced software technologies that empower future ABB products in automation and electrification, supporting a more sustainable world. You will collaborate at the intersection of industrial research and academia, working with partners across the globe.

• Initiate, lead, and contribute to applied research and technology transfer projects in collaboration with international ABB divisions, product development teams, customers, partners, and academic institutions.
• Continuously scout and adapt emerging technologies in software engineering and software architecture, especially related to AI for software engineering, cloud-native and edge computing architectures or embedded software systems.
• Apply your practical expertise in software engineering to industrial systems.
• Build prototypes to validate concepts and effectively communicate your work within ABB, to customers, and at scientific conferences.
• Protect intellectual property through patent applications and contribute to scientific publications.
• Actively develop your technical and interpersonal skills to advance your career.

Qualifications for the role

• Degree in computer science, software engineering, automation engineering, or a related field, complemented by either academic experience (PhD) or professional experience in industrial software engineering.
• Practical experience in software design and development (e.g., .NET, C++, Python, Java), also with the help of AI assistants or with AI-enhanced systems (SE4AI and/or AI4SE)
• Knowledge in edge and cloud technologies or embedded systems
• Proven track record in publishing research results at conferences and/or in journals.
• Beneficial: Domain knowledge in process automation
• Beneficial: Industrial automation technologies (e.g., Asset Administration Shell, OPC UA, IEC 61131-3, IEC 61499, etc.)
• Beneficial: Experience in project management
