Position: Shirley and John Sarks Chair in Age‑related Macular Degeneration, School of Clinical Medicine, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia.

This Chair is a full‑time (35 h/week) or part‑time (negotiated) appointment at Level D–E (Associate Professor–Professor). The appointment is initial 5‑year followed by continuing substantive appointment. Salary is competitive at Level D or E, plus superannuation, leave loading and other applicable loadings. Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are available. A personal research support package will be negotiated. The Chair is located at UNSW Kensington Campus, co‑located with the UNSW Health Translation Hub.

Opportunity

The Chair will lead world‑class clinical and laboratory research into age‑related macular degeneration (AMD) and other blinding eye diseases. The incumbent will advance knowledge of the causes and cures for AMD, aligning with UNSW’s Better, Equitable Health for All Strategy, and will build engagement and partnerships with the profession, industry and the broader community.

Key Skills Required – Level D (Associate Professor)

• A PhD (or equivalent) in a basic science or clinical discipline related to AMD.
• Proven commitment to keeping up to date with discipline knowledge.
• Significant track record in research leadership with high‑quality, high‑impact outcomes.
• Demonstrated academic excellence and contribution to research and scholarship.
• Demonstrated leadership in building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry.

Additional Skills – Level E (Professor)

• Significant track record in AMD research leadership with high‑quality, high‑impact publications.
• Leadership of teams and projects, and substantial experience supervising higher‑degree research and postgraduate staff.
• Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and collaboration skills across disciplines, faculties, institutions, industry and professional bodies.
• Leadership in engagement and partnerships with funders, the profession, stakeholders, industry and the broader community.

Desirable

• A medical practitioner with ophthalmology expertise, ideally registered or eligible to be registered in Australia (AHPRA).
