Special Operations Physical Therapist – Provide evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions. Licensed independent practitioner credentialed as direct care provider in specific military HP settings.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Evaluate and treat patients with or without referrals.
- Refer patients to other POTFF staff members as needed.
- Provide neuro‑musculoskeletal injury care, including ordering imaging, labs, pharmaceuticals, dry needling, acupuncture, joint injections, and referrals to specialty providers.
- Directly supervise the PT Tech, PT Assistant, and/or Certified Athletic Trainer within their scope of practice as directed by the HP Program Manager/Coordinator.
- Participate in periodic meetings with HP and POTFF to review patient care and identify improvement opportunities.
- Serve as an advisor on sports medicine, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and human performance research for the HP Program Manager/Coordinator.
- Serve as an advisor for administrative matters, purchasing supplies, equipment, and supplemental fiscal requests.
- Conduct equipment, product, and literature reviews to keep the HP program current.
- Provide input for developing and utilizing required databases.
- Conduct peer (record) reviews for HP staff as directed by governing credentialing bodies and local medical oversight processes.
- Assist in developing and updating criteria‑based job descriptions and performance standards.
- Assist in developing and maintaining clinical practice guidelines across HP Training Centers and associated facilities.
- Assist with short‑ and long‑term fiscal planning and submit input to the HP Program Manager/Coordinator.
- Attend and participate in meetings with other POTFF staff and medical providers as required.
- Ensure safe and effective operation of patient‑care equipment and contribute to a safe working environment.
- Participate in periodic in‑service training for HP or POTFF staff as appropriate.
- Attend required training and conferences for continuing education units to maintain certification.
- Maintain 100% compliance with local mandatory command training requirements.
- Document care in the Military’s Electronic Health Record (e.g., AHLTA, MHS GENESIS) and/or HP Enterprise‑wide database (e.g., Smartbase) as required by DODI and HP program directives.
- Collect and report all requested data to the HP Program Manager/Coordinator and USSOCOM HQ/its POTFF staff.
- Proficiently utilize computers, software, and technologies as required for the HP program.
- Perform other tasks within the scope of the PT position as assigned.
Required Education / Experience / Skills / Training
- U.S. Citizenship.
- Secret or Top Secret Clearance, or ability to obtain one.
- Master’s degree in Physical Therapy.
- Certification through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) as OCS or SCS, or certification as an athletic trainer (ATC) through NATA.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a Physical Therapist in one of the U.S. States, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Maintain credentialing requirements in good standing at the local MTF.
- Demonstrated ability to meet the physical demands of SOF training, including hiking over rough terrain, functioning in austere environments, and observing SOF training evolutions.
- Ability to assist with strength and conditioning testing, lifting and manipulating loads up to 25 kg.
- Minimum of five (5) years of continuous and sustained experience in manual therapy for athletes, preferably at NCAA Division I, Olympic, professional, or SOF Operator settings.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification by the American Heart Association; must provide proof of training and documentation.
Desired Education, Experience, Skills or Training
- Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy.
- Prior military and/or SOF experience.
- Additional credentials such as Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through NSCA.
