Volunteer - Robotics Engineer (Physical AI Division)

We are a student-led initiatives at TUM-XR based in Munich, focused on building next-generation Physical AI systems that bridge robotics , perception , and human-robot interaction . Our projects explore the intersection of robotics, extended reality (XR), and AI, with a strong emphasis on real-world deployment using physical robotic platforms.

Role Description

We are looking for motivated students to join our Physical AI division, working on real robotic systems (not simulation-only).

Our work spans a wide range of topics in modern robotics, and you may contribute to one or more of the following areas:

1. Robotics & Control

  • Programming and controlling robotic hardware (robot manipulators , robot hand, quadruped robots , drones , mobile platforms , etc.) using Python and ROS2
  • Integrating computer vision and perception modules (e.g. vision-based detection , object tracking , or 3D scene understanding )
  • Working with 3D reconstruction techniques such as Gaussian Splatting
  • Developing imitation and reinforcement learning pipelines for dataset collection and policy learning

4. Human-Robot Interaction & Telerobotics

  • Working on robot teleoperation using XR interfaces and VR headsets
  • Implementing motion tracking and intuitive control systems for human-robot interaction

5. Simulation & Digital Twins

  • Creating digital twins for debugging, visualization, and system validation
  • Working on real-to-sim and sim-to-real workflows

Qualifications

  • Basic programming skills (Python required ; knowledge of C++ or C# is a plus)
  • Interest in robotics, cognition, perception, or human-robot interaction
  • Familiarity with at least one of the following areas is a plus (not mandatory):
    • ROS2 framework
    • Simulation tools (e.g., Isaac Sim , Unity , or other digital twin environments)
  • Hands‑on mindset and willingness to work with real robotic hardware systems
  • Ability to learn independently and contribute in a collaborative team

This role offers the opportunity to gain practical experience with real robotic systems, collaborate in a fast‑paced team , and contribute to cutting‑edge projects at the intersection of robotics and AI .

This is a volunteer position based in Munich, Germany. On‑site participation is expected , as the work involves physical robotic systems.
