The University of Kassel is a modern and growing university with about 21 000 students. The university’s wide range of expertise covers natural, applied, cultural and social sciences.
The Kunsthochschule Kassel announces the following position in the Study Program Visual Communication, to be filled by 1 March 2027.
The focus of the position is to teach animation as a form of artistic expression and a means of communication, with a foundation in classical animal films. This foundation can then open up into the wide variety of contemporary animation practices, including digital methods of production, experimental techniques, and interactive narrative forms.
As a teacher and researcher, the position should reflect on animation in its aesthetic, technical, theoretical, and political dimensions. Collaboration with other departments at the Kunsthochschule, by interacting with artistic‑creative development plans, is expected.
The current teaching load for the half‑time position is 9 semester hours per week (according to LVerpflV HE, the Hessian Ordinance on Teaching Duties). This can be fulfilled in Visual Communication by supervising a class, in this case the Animation class.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate an exceptional, internationally recognized artistic practice in the area of animation art. They should possess sound knowledge of both classical and digital animation techniques, as well as theoretical debates about the fundamentals of the medium. A particular focus should be given to stop‑frame animation and puppet construction.
As a teacher and researcher, applicants must demonstrate qualifications for teaching at art academies and hold appropriate teaching experience. A teaching and working concept (maximum 2 pages) demonstrating the candidate’s pedagogical approaches, reflections on cooperative and cross‑departmental work, and how the breadth of the profile will be communicated in the teaching process should be included with the application. The teaching concept must also describe how the content will be communicated in the teaching process. Ability to conduct teaching in German must be demonstrated, and very good English skills are a clear advantage. Documentation must be provided of a relevant degree from an art academy or proven experience in academic self‑management.
Please send your application with the usual informative documents, stating the reference number in the subject line, via the online form available through the university’s website. For further questions, contact Prof. Rebecca Stephany at Stephany(at)uni-kassel.de .
