W2 Professorship (with W3 tenure track) in Pathomechanisms of hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial stewardship

The Faculty of Medicine of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) and the University Hospital Giessen and Marburg GmbH (UKGM), Giessen Campus invite applications for a W2 Professorship provisionally limited to a period of six years, with a possible transition to a permanent W3 professorship upon eligibility evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the antimicrobial stewardship program and publicise the field in research, teaching, and patient care in nosocomial infections and antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Conduct clinically relevant basic research on nosocomial infections and inflammation, using innovative ex vivo organ and animal models and analysing human cohorts; plan or participate in mono‑ and multi‑centre clinical trials.
  • Engage in translational research and actively participate in existing research networks and international collaborations (e.g., Cluster of Excellence “Cardiopulmonary Institute”, DFG Research Unit FOR 5427 “Bacterial Renal Infection and Defense”, JLU focus areas, Research Campus of Central Hessen).
  • Secure external funding independently and collaborate with national and international research partners.
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses as stipulated by the Faculty of Medicine regulations, delivering interdisciplinary lectures and practical sessions.
  • Integrate gender aspects into research and teaching.
  • Participate in cross‑university and hospital patient‑oriented clinical research and joint clinical studies.
  • Contribute to early‑career researcher development through programs such as the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences, the structured doctoral program (JLU TRAINEE), and the clinician‑scientist program (JLU CAREER).

Requirements

  • Completed medical university education with a doctoral degree, and qualification for scientific work under § 67 Para. 1 HessHG (e.g., habilitation or peer‑reviewed, internationally recognized publications).
  • Board certification (specialist qualification) in hygiene and environmental medicine, microbiology, virology and infectious disease epidemiology, or internal medicine and infectious diseases.
  • International recognition in the field of basic research on infectious diseases, with proven ability to acquire external funding.
  • Pedagogical aptitude for teaching the specialist field across the curriculum.
  • Broad clinical expertise in infectious diseases and/or infection prevention, with experience in antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Proficient knowledge of German.
  • For candidates older than 50 years, a specific functional interest as required by § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act, in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation.
