W3 Professorship for Palliative Medicine

is to be filled on a permanent basis on 1 April 2026. The professorship is associated with the management of the Department of Palliative Medicine at UKB and also the medical directorship of the Center for Palliative Medicine at Helios Klinikum Bonn.

The Department of Palliative Medicine at UKB comprises eight in-patient beds, the in-hospital palliative care service, and the outpatient clinic. It is a member of the Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO) Bonn in the CIO ABCD (AachenBonnCologneDüsseldorf). The Center for Palliative Medicine at Helios Klinikum Bonn also comprises eight in-patient beds, the in-hospital palliative care service, the specialized outpatient palliative care team, and the outpatient hospice service. The Academy for Palliative Medicine is part of the Helios Education Center with professional development and further training opportunities for all professional groups within palliative care. The two institutions each treat over 1000 patients with life‑limiting illnesses each year on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

A nationally and internationally recognized personality is sought who visibly represents the field of palliative medicine in patient care, research, and teaching. The continuation and further expansion of the clinical and academic collaborations undertaken at the site with the oncological and other specialist departments and cooperation with the departments at the Helios Klinikum is expected, along with a willingness to cooperate in an interdisciplinary manner within the specialist research areas of the Faculty of Medicine and in the Bonn Network for Healthcare Research. Expertise and previous experience with regard to the certification measures of the DKG and DGP and participation in the clinical ethics committee are desired.

The future job holder is expected to further expand research within palliative medicine with their own specialisms. Relevant experience in acquiring and managing third‑party funded projects and internationally visible publications is essential; active involvement in national and international networks is desired.

Special commitment to and experience in teaching students in accordance with section 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine‑Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz NRW) is required. Involvement in the further development of the Longitudinal Communication Curriculum and in training at the Bonn Graduate Schools (BIGS) is welcomed.

The successful candidate must have a license to practice as a doctor, certification as a specialist and additional qualification in palliative medicine, and a habilitation or evidence of
equivalent academic achievements. In addition to technical expertise and leadership skills, communication skills and a willingness to cooperate are particularly required.

The University of Bonn is committed to diversity and equal opportunity. It is certified as a family‑friendly university. It aims to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are under‑represented and to promote their careers in particular. It therefore strongly encourages women with relevant qualifications to apply. Applications will be handled in accordance with the Landesgleichstellungsgesetz (State Equality Act). Applications from suitable individuals with a certified serious disability and those of equal status are particularly welcome.

Qualified candidates are asked to apply via the Appointment Portal of the University of Bonn. The application can be submitted in German or English by January 19, 2026.
