Project B1: Intraoperative Localization and Navigation

The development of modern surgical procedures focuses increasingly on minimizing invasiveness, morbidity, and treatment duration while maximizing therapeutic outcome. A key challenge during interventions is the reliable identification of target structures and surrounding tissues, particularly critical in oncological surgery.

The GRK 2543 project focuses on intra‑operative tissue differentiation. By fusing data from novel multimodal sensor systems, the aim is to achieve a more precise discrimination of different tissue types than is possible with individual sensing modalities alone. For more information:

Project B1 ensures the precise localization and navigation of the investigated tissue regions. Only when the positions of the measurement points are accurately determined can acquired information be correctly fused, interpreted, and retrieved during subsequent interventions. Machine‑learning methods are developed that transform intra‑operative image data into patient‑specific models, serving as a central framework in which all intra‑operative information is stored, combined, and made accessible for further analysis.
