Systems Development Engineering (SDE) at Google is a role where you manage services and systems at scale. SDEs creatively put their engineering discipline to use automating the mundane and reducing toil. We don’t just write code to fix bugs, but emphasize the development of tools and solutions that fix classes of problems. We focus on observability: instrumenting first, then turning data into knowledge, and finally knowledge into action. We engineer and build the infrastructure, tools, access and telemetry for systems that enable orchestration of Google‑scale services. Come build things that matter.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and resolve day‑to‑day infrastructure issues such as network, storage, servers, OS, Kubernetes, etc.
• Collaborate with customers and internal development organizations to accomplish shared goals.
• Deploy to customer, partner, and internal team environments with required training and international travel.
• Train Google partners through train‑the‑trainer programs, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to conduct customer deployments.
• Support escalations from client deployments and internal reference deployments via participation in the 24x7 on‑call rotation.

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
• 3 years of experience with systems automation, design, implementation, and technical infrastructure (deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting).
• Experience in TCP/IP and networking concepts (PXE boot, subnets, VLANs, jumbo frames, LACP, NIC teaming, unicast/broadcast/multicast, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, SSH, etc.) and in one or more infrastructure areas: Linux, Kubernetes, networking, storage, etc.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Level 2 security clearance (SÜ2) under the German Classification Act (SÜG).

Preferred qualifications

• Experience as a Customer Solution Engineer.
• Experience scripting (e.g., Bash, Perl, Python, Ruby, etc.) to automate routine tasks.
• Experience in Site Reliability Engineering or IT production systems engineering.
• Understanding of physical server, storage, and network devices.
• Ability to travel internationally up to 25% of the time.
• Excellent relationship‑building skills and the ability to empathize with customers.
