The Astronomisches Rechen-Institut (ARI) at the Center for Astronomy of Heidelberg University (ZAH) is seeking to fill the position of a:

Technical Staff Member / Software Developer (f/m/d)

at the earliest possible date. This is a part‑time position (50% of full‑time hours, or 19.75 hours per week) which may become permanent.

Your responsibilities:

  • Development of web applications using the Django framework for managing and selecting astronomical targets their classification, data aggregation and visualization in the context of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory‑s Transient and Variable Science Collaboration
  • Development and maintenance of REST APIs using Django REST Framework as well as front‑end development and data visualization tools
  • Ensuring software quality through testing in production using continuous integration methods and tools, as well as code reviews
  • Writing technical documentation for developed applications and APIs
  • Liaising with science community user groups as well as user support

Your profile:

  • Technical qualification in computer science or a related STEM field
  • Strong proficiency in Python programming is essential
  • Knowledge of the Django framework is desirable
  • Very good command of English, both written and spoken
  • Solid understanding of web development principles is advantageous
  • Knowledge of working with databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL is desirable
  • Basic understanding of astronomy and astrophysics would be beneficial
