Post Context

1st NATO Signal Battalion operates, maintains, and sustains Deployable Communication Information Systems (DCIS) to enable command and control (C2) in support of deployed NATO Headquarters and entities during Alliance operations, missions and exercises.

The Maintenance and Support Company (M&S Coy) is responsible for Level 1 and Level 2 CIS support of NATO DCIS and for Level 1 and Level 2 preventive and corrective maintenance of non-CIS equipment.

The Communications and Information Systems Platoon is responsible for Communications and Information Systems (CIS) Level 2/2+ CIS support of all CIS assets integral to the Battalion.

The Information Systems Administration Section is responsible for installing, operating and Level 2/2+ CIS support of all information systems (IS) integral to the Battalion.

The incumbent is responsible for technical support of the assigned Core Services, also known as Core IS, in operations and exercises. In addition, the incumbent provides technical support during system uplifts and User Acceptance Test (UATs) of new capabilities.

The main duties of Technician (Information Systems) are to:

  • Perform a technical DCIS wide level 2 support function for Core services, also known as Core IS.
  • Assist the Section Head and IS/DCoI Engineer in ensuring that preparation, operation and maintenance of all DCIS assets is kept at highest standards to allow rapid deployment.
  • Support the System Administration (SA) of the Hardware (HW) and Software to include operating systems, virtual infrastructure, windows servers, email servers, print and file servers, anti-virus servers, web servers, database servers, clusters, Storage Area Networks.
  • Perform server administration tasks, including user/group administration, security permissions, group policies, research event log warnings and errors, and resource monitoring to ensure systems are technically ready.
  • Interact with the service desk and other teams to assist in troubleshooting, identify root cause, and provide technical support when needed.
  • Perform the investigation and resolution of problems related to Core services.
  • Assist at interoperability trials and performs on-the-job training for newly assigned personnel.
  • Support military technicians in the system deployment, trouble-shooting and day-to-day administration.
  • Support system uplifts as needed and works together with NCI Agency in order to bring NATO assets to the latest approved system baseline.
  • As required, perform systems tests prior to deployments/exercises to ensure proper configuration and operation of assigned systems.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

The incumbent may be required to perform a similar range of duties elsewhere within the organisation at the same grade without there being any change to the contract. It may be required to undertake deployments in support of military operations and exercises, and/or TDY (duty travel) assignments, both within and without NATO boundaries. Such operational deployment may be up to a total 6 months (uninterrupted or in shorter periods) in any period of 18 months and may be on short notice. Acceptance of an employment contract linked to this post constitutes agreement to deploy.

Required Qualifications are:

  • English – good – NATO Standard Language Proficiency 3322 (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) in accordance with NATO standard agreement (STANAG) 6001. Note: The work both oral and written in this post and in this Headquarters as a whole is conducted mainly in English.
  • Secondary Education and completed vocational training in network engineering, computer science, information systems engineering or related field/discipline.
  • Minimum three years’ professional experience in system administration of Core Information Systems. This includes Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft FIM, Domain Naming, Group Policies, Desktop deployment.
  • Minimum three years’ professional experience deploying and managing server virtualization technologies.
  • Minimum one-year professional experience in Web platforms and database management.
  • Basic knowledge in Service Management particularly in incident and change management procedures.
  • Good knowledge of LAN/WAN and network concepts.
  • Practical experience in creating system documentation and status reports.
  • Practical experience in IT infrastructure management and capacity management.
  • Practical experience in storage concepts and backup/recovery policies.

Desirable Qualifications are:

  • ITIL Foundation Certification
  • Microsoft Certified Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate
  • Driving license B
  • Experience in a military deployed CIS environment.
  • Professional experience in user technical support, Service Desk operations and/or configuration management.
  • Professional experience in management of Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft IIS
  • Professional experience providing Core Enterprise Services in NATO Exercises and Operations.
  • Good knowledge of NATO CIS, its concepts, policies and architecture.
  • Completion of for this position relevant courses/training.

The successfully selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance and is required to pass a medical examination before an employment contract offer will be released. The medical examination will take place with our medical consultant, is required to determine if the recommended candidate is fit to perform the duties and be deployable to NATO's Areas of Operation.
