Our Research Focus

We investigate the functional relevance of mast cells in innate and adaptive immune responses, in acute and chronic inflammatory processes, in vivo. Our research focuses on the intercellular communication of mast cells with tissue‑resident immune cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages, as well as non‑immune cells, including the endothelium and epithelium. We also examine perivascular mast cells and their influence on blood vessel activation and recruitment of effector immune cells. Additionally, we study mast cells’ role in regulating barrier integrity and inter‑organ communication. We employ innovative transgenic in vivo mouse models, combined with high‑end imaging techniques—such as intravital two‑photon microscopy, three‑dimensional light‑sheet microscopy, multi‑parameter microscopy and live‑cell imaging—alongside molecular biology, cell biology, immunology methods and omics technologies.

Responsibilities and Expectations

As a PhD student you will conduct research projects in the area of mast cell biology, utilizing advanced imaging, molecular, cellular, and bioinformatics methods. You will design experiments, analyze data, collaborate with an international research team, and contribute to scientific publications and presentations.

Qualifications

• Excellent background in biology, biochemistry or related disciplines.
• Strong interest in immunology, allergy, or inflammation research.
• Good teamwork skills and self‑motivation.
• Experience in cell biology, immunology or molecular biology techniques.
• Experience with transgenic mouse models, tissue processing or microscopy techniques is advantageous.

Benefits
