At the University of Potsdam, Faculty of Sciences/Institute of Geosciences, Chair of General Geology ,the following position is to be filled for a limited period of 3 years, if possible from 1 September 2026:

The working time comprises 40 hours per week (100 %). The classification is in accordance with pay group 13 of the pay scale for the TV-Länder.The fixed-term contract is in accordance with § 2 para. 1 of the German Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG). There is the possibility of an extension of up to three years if the personal and collective agreement requirements are met.

Your work area:

The General Geology working group at the Institute of Geosciences, which currently consists of three permanent and nine temporary scientific staff and three technical staff, is responsible for teaching in the fields of general geosciences, structural geology, tectonics and Earth surface processes in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Geosciences. The research activities of the group combine studies of tectonics, climate and surface processes on different time scales with the overall aim of gaining a better understanding of these complex interacting processes that shape our planet and our habitat. Our laboratory facilities include a full range of low-temperature thermochronological methods as well as GIS resources, a 3D laboratory and a graphics laboratory. The working language of the research group is English.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Independent research in the fields of surface processes, landscape development, active tectonics and/or tectonics & structural geology
  • Preparing research proposals and scientific publications
  • Teaching: Organising and delivering the practical classes in the Introductory Geosciences module; supervision of mapping courses, organisation of exercises and field schools
  • Assistance in the organisation of courses, especially for the Introduction to Geosciences, and in the general organisation of the working group

There is the possibility of further academic qualification (Habilitation). At least one third of the respective working time is available for personal research work.

The teaching load is based on the applicable requirements of the Teaching Obligation Ordinance (LehrVV) of the State of Brandenburg and thebandwidth regulation adopted by the Senate of the University of Potsdam. This position is assigned to the group of academic staff with qualification opportunities .

You meet the following requirements :

  • Master and PhD(at least successfully defended at the time of application) in geosciences, preferably in the fields of geomorphology, tectonics or structural geology
  • Proven experience in independent research and publications
  • The ability to teach in German (at Bachelor level) is a requirement
  • Experience in and affinity for academic teaching at Bachelor's and Master's level
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team, and to communicate in English
