AI Solutions Engineer (Customer Projects) (m/f/d)

The GWDG is seeking one to join an interdisciplinary team of HPC experts in the working group “Computing” (AG C) with a regular working week of 39 hours (100%). Remuneration is in accordance with the collective agreement for the German public service (federal government); depending on qualifications, the position will be grade E 13. The position is suitable for part‑time work and initially limited till  . The GWDG strives for long‑term cooperation and offers the possibility of a doctorate.

The Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG) is the university computing centre for the Georg‑August‑Universität Göttingen and a computing and IT competence centre for the Max Planck Society. The GWDG has provided high‑performance HPC systems for over 40 years and operates the HLRN‑IV system “Emmy”, one of the most powerful computers in the world.

As a national supercomputing centre, the GWDG offers technical support to researchers and students from various science domains and participates in national and international research projects. It collaborates with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) and the Institute for Advanced Simulation Jülich (IAS‑JSC).

In the AI Service Center for Sensitive and Critical Infrastructure (KISSKI) the GWDG has created AI‑based services that offer high levels of security and privacy. It collaborates with customers, including universities, public institutions and companies, to explore their applications of AI technologies.

Responsibilities

• Develop prototypes exploring how AI‑based approaches can solve specific customer challenges (e.g., data analysis, automation).
• Collaborate directly with customers to gather requirements, clarify use cases, and iteratively refine prototypes based on feedback.
• Integrate diverse technologies (databases, cloud services, ML frameworks) to build functional demos.
• Design appropriate solutions to address customer use cases building upon our existing AI infrastructure.
• Document prototypes for internal knowledge sharing and customer handover.

Requirements

• Experience with Python.
• Experience with application design and development.
• Experience with Linux integration.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts to non‑technical customers.
• Broad technical understanding to judge which technologies to apply.
• Fluent in written and spoken English.

Desirable

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field.
• Experience with AI/ML product development.
• Experience with customer‑facing technical roles.
• Experience with service‑oriented user support.
• Experience with DevOps practices including Git, Docker and CI/CD.
• Exposure to HPC, scientific computing, or data‑intensive domains.
• Intermediate knowledge of German.
