Overview

Motivation and Problem Statement

Management decisions require an integrated view of operational performance and financial results. In practice, however, the reporting landscape is often fragmented: data is available in different systems but is evaluated in a function‑specific and isolated manner without a company‑wide, consistent link between operational key figures and financial results. As a result, cause‑and‑effect relationships along central business processes remain opaque, and strategic control impulses can only be derived to a limited extent. The aim of this thesis is therefore to develop an integrated performance reporting concept based on Power BI. The central challenge here is not primarily technical data integration, but rather the conceptual transfer of business processes into a control‑relevant reporting logic.

Objectives of the Thesis

The objective of this master’s thesis is the implementation of an integrated Power BI‑based performance dashboard that establishes a consolidated management view across the organization. The thesis includes the identification and integration of relevant data sources, the development of a structured and scalable data model, and the definition of clear KPI calculation logic aligned with business objectives.

The resulting dashboard must fulfil two essential requirements:

  • It must provide a clear and structured executive‑level overview of company performance.
  • It must allow drill‑down capabilities from aggregated KPIs down to underlying processes, enabling root‑cause analysis and performance steering.

Responsibilities

  • Build an integrated Power BI‑based performance dashboard that provides a consolidated management view across the organization.
  • Identify and integrate relevant data sources, develop a structured and scalable data model, and define clear KPI calculation logic aligned with business objectives.
  • Ensure that the dashboard provides a clear and structured executive‑level overview of company performance and that it allows drill‑down capabilities from aggregated KPIs down to underlying processes, enabling root‑cause analysis and performance steering.

Skills required

  • Study with focus on Business Science/Business Information Systems/Business Intelligence/Data science/Data analytics/Statistics or similar.
  • Fundamentals of data modelling / information structuring.
  • Advanced knowledge of data analysis and modelling (Power BI, DAX, visualisation best practices).
  • Basic programming skills (Excel VBA, Python, R, or comparable tools).
  • Strong technical and business‑oriented understanding.
  • Understanding of business KPIs and financial logic.
  • Ability to work independently and in a structured manner.
  • Strong analytical skills and solution‑oriented mindset.
  • Independence and proactivity.
  • Ability to quickly understand complex topics.
