Introduction Established in 1951, IOM is a related Organization of the United Nations and is a leading UN agency in the field of migration. IOM works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners to promote humane and orderly migration through services and advice.
Context Under the overall supervision of the Global DTM Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Route-based Officer (DTM) and Project Manager (DTM), the Junior Route-based Officer – Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) will provide support across a range of DTM route-based activities, including research, analysis, reporting and project support for a joint initiative by UNHCR and IOM to harmonise data collection methodologies, terminologies and related processes along key mixed movement routes.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to qualitative and mixed-methods data analysis for route-based research initiatives, focusing on migration routes in West and Central Africa.
- Support the production of route-based analytical outputs, including thematic reports, presentations, and infographics through research, drafting, editing and formatting.
- Support the analysis and preparation of outputs related to intention surveys targeting Syrian migrants, including data analysis, drafting of findings and preparation of research products.
- Assist in the development and refinement of data collection tools, methodological guidance and research instruments to strengthen route-based work across migration corridors.
- Contribute to global route-based analytical products, including the Global Overview of Migration Routes, by drafting thematic content and supporting layout and design.
- Support the preparation and review of data products, reports and web content for the DTM data portal in line with IOM editorial and data standards.
- Respond to route-based data and information requests by compiling, analysing, and presenting relevant information to support stakeholders.
- Assist the Project Manager (DTM) with the implementation of a joint IOM and UNHCR initiative to harmonise data collection methodologies, terminologies and related processes along key mixed movement routes, including coordination of the Technical Working Group (TWG) and following up on action points.
- Contribute to the mapping of existing data systems, tools and terminologies along key mixed movement routes in support of harmonisation efforts between IOM and UNHCR.
- Support engagement with internal and external stakeholders, including UN agencies, national governments and NGOs, by preparing background materials, briefings and correspondence to facilitate coordination on data aspects of IOM's route-based approach.
- Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Education
- Master’s degree in Social and Political Sciences, Development Studies, Information Management, Migration Studies or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or,
- University degree in the above fields with two years of relevant professional experience.
Experience
- Experience with data visualisation and publication software, including the Adobe suite (Illustrator and InDesign).
- At least two years of relevant professional experience in data analysis, research or a related field, preferably within a migration, humanitarian or development context.
- Demonstrated experience in qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis, including the use of statistical or data visualisation tools.
- Experience contributing to the production of analytical reports, policy briefs or research outputs, including drafting, editing and formatting.
- Experience supporting the production of country-level or regional migration reports and analysis along key global migration routes, including familiarity with migration trends, drivers and dynamics and key global and regional migration frameworks.
- Experience working in the United Nations or other international development organisations is considered an asset.
Skills
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work well as part of a geographically dispersed, multicultural team with colleagues from various professional backgrounds.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated analytical skills in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including familiarity with qualitative analysis software such as NVivo or ATLAS.ti.
- Excellent writing skills with the ability to communicate complex information clearly and accessibly for diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to quality across all stages of research, analysis and reporting.
- Demonstrated organisational skills and ability to prioritise across multiple workstreams.
- Creative thinking and ability to present data and findings in compelling and visually engaging formats.
Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages. For this position, fluency in English and French is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) is an advantage.
