At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and make adaptable, safe and sustainable. In close cooperation with partners from research, industry and other maritime security stakeholders, we combine technological innovation with practical expertise and offer you the opportunity to work on pioneering projects.

We are looking for an Electrical Engineer, Physicist or similar (f/m/x) to join our Maritime Security Technologies team. In this role, you will work on state‑of‑the‑art underwater sensors and acoustic systems, design algorithms for acoustic signal processing, simulate underwater sound channels, conduct experimental tests, and integrate results into a maritime situational awareness system.

You will immerse yourself in cutting‑edge technology to protect the maritime domain. Our work supports harbours, offshore wind farms and more, driving innovation in safety and sustainability.

Your tasks

  • Development of algorithms for signal processing and evaluation of data from acoustic systems (e.g. active and passive sonars)
  • Extension and improvement of an existing simulation environment for sonar signal processing
  • Experimental tests of developed algorithms using available acoustic systems, including validation through comparison with simulated results
  • Integration of your work into our maritime situational awareness system

Your profile

  • Completed scientific university degree (university diploma or Master's degree) in an engineering field (e.g. electrical engineering), a scientific field (e.g. physics) or other degree programs relevant to the job
  • Programming skills (e.g. in Python or MATLAB)
  • Knowledge and experience in digital signal processing
  • Knowledge and experience in acoustics, sonar, radar or expertise in similar areas
  • Experience in planning and conducting measurements and/or experiments
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 13 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks.

Location: Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures, Bremerhaven, Germany.
