Job Description

The Optical Networks System & Automation group develops pluggable transceiver modules for coherent optical fiber transmission. Applications include Communication Service Provider (CSP) network nodes as well as intra‑ and inter‑data‑center connections. Our team is part of a module development group comprising hardware development, custom ASIC design, optical component experts and firmware (FW) engineers. We work closely with all functions required from product definition to manufacturing.

We are expanding our FW team and looking for highly motivated engineers to join us in developing the next generations of transmission systems. The FW team is responsible for designing, integrating, and verifying all software parts required for an optical coherent transceiver module. This includes software targeting a complex multi‑processor system embedded in custom hardware, low‑level driver software, algorithms controlling optical components and the digital signal processor, higher‑layer control software and the management‑interface application.

How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn

  • Independent development of DSP / ARM embedded software using a Real‑Time Operating System (RTOS).
  • Implement and validate the code, document the test results, and create automated tests.
  • Work in interdisciplinary teams (hardware, ASIC, optics, factory).
  • Cover systems engineering aspects and documentation, including feature implementation details, SW user guide and interface to SW.
  • Improve our code quality by extending the test framework and adding test cases for the CI/CD pipeline.
  • Provide automation solutions (e.g., Jenkins, Python).
  • Understand the various functional areas:
    • Device drivers and link drivers including PLLs (Phase‑Locked Loops)
    • Control concepts for optical devices, including stability analysis
    • DSP configuration in coherent optical communication
    • High‑speed ADC/DAC configuration and control
    • Various protocols used in coherent optical communication

Key Skills And Experience

Must have:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering / computer science / computer engineering or a related field (or Bachelor’s degree with +5 years of experience).
  • Fluent in English and intermediate in German (B1‑B2 preferred, aim to become fluent).
  • Experience with Python.
  • Profound knowledge of C and knowledge of C++.
  • Experience with revision control systems (Git, Gerrit, Bitbucket).
  • Very good analytical thinking and strong communication skills with ability to work independently and self‑organized.

Nice to have:

  • Profound knowledge of embedded programming concepts.
  • Experience with Eclipse‑based IDE or Visual Studio Code.
  • Experience with advanced control loop theory and communications theory.
  • Knowledge of coherent optical communication systems and signal processing.
  • Knowledge of OTN / OCH and/or GBE frame structure.
  • Knowledge of system theory for optical communication systems.
  • Experience in feedback control systems and digital signal processing.
  • Knowledge of components for optical transmission (laser, EDFA, MZM, …).
  • Collaboration with multi‑site, cross‑functional, international teams.
  • Flexibility and ability to cope with project pressure.
