German Aerospace Center (DLR)

Engineer (m/f/d) for Implementation and Research in Model-in-the-Loop Simulations (M.Sc.)

Stellenbeschreibung:

At the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems Engineering, pioneering solutions for road and rail transport are developed at the Berlin and Braunschweig sites. The research activities focus on increasing traffic safety and efficiency.

What To Expect

Our research at the Institute of Transportation Systems Engineering makes road traffic smarter, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly. Simulation plays a key role in driving innovation and accelerating the introduction of new technologies such as automated driving. With GEMSTAR, our in‑house Model‑in‑the‑Loop simulation framework, we develop and evaluate automation functions and their fields of application for the traffic of tomorrow. This is where technological milestones for autonomous driving are created.

As part of our dynamic, interdisciplinary team, you will play a key role in shaping the future of highly automated driving—at the intersection of simulation, real‑world application, and regulation. With your expertise in Model‑in‑the‑Loop (MiL) simulations and your strong background in software development, you will contribute in particular to the development and validation of simulations based on real‑world data and apply them directly in exciting national and European research projects.

Your Tasks

  • Bringing simulations to life: You analyze and evaluate existing GEMSTAR software modules and concepts.
  • Pioneering work: You independently design, develop, and evaluate simulation modules and deploy them in application‑oriented projects.
  • Rethinking test methods: You implement new testing methodologies both in simulation environments and in real‑world testing.
  • Keeping an eye on regulation and economic viability: You combine technical expertise with strategic perspectives—how can results be made market‑ready and compliant with regulatory requirements?
  • Shaping research: You work on highly relevant projects where theory meets practice and your ideas have a direct impact.
  • Taking responsibility: Depending on your professional experience, we support you through further training in preparation for taking on leading roles in national and international projects.

Your Profile

  • A completed academic university degree (Master’s/Diploma) in Computer Science, Engineering, or another field relevant to the position
  • Programming skills, especially in C++ and/or Python, ideally with practical experience in applied projects
  • A strong understanding of complex systems and an analytical approach
  • Convincing communication skills and experience working in teams—whether in technical discussions, coordination with colleagues, or presenting results
  • Good German and English skills, both written and spoken, enabling confident communication in national and international contexts

We look forward to getting to know you!
