Fire Protection Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical expert in the Fire Prevention / Protection (FPP) functional area, responsible for establishing and implementing district‑wide FPP engineering regulations, codes, criteria, standards, and technical processes.
  • Provide technical review and advice in fire protection designs and construction issues in the field; coordinate the work of other architects and engineers and standardize the application of criteria and standards.
  • Work involves complex features such as engineered smoke removal, automatic water sprinklers, various extinguishing systems, fire‑resistant construction materials, life‑safety analysis of building features, and fire detection/alarm systems.
  • Conduct fire protection engineering surveys and inspections of existing buildings, structures, equipment, water supplies, fire reporting systems, and fire suppression systems throughout Europe; prepare assessments and recommendations.
  • Manage FPP requirements at the project programming stage and throughout occupancy.
  • Provide consultation to district offices, facility users, and DoD customers regarding fire protection and detection system design, data, and technical issues.
  • Review and approve design documents, scopes of work, performance work statements, studies, and analyses prepared by in‑house personnel and Architect‑Engineer firms to ensure technical accuracy and code compliance.
  • Develop contract documentation for design studies, scopes of work, performance work statements, assessments, and contract drawings for USACE.
  • Perform construction site inspections to confirm ongoing and completed work complies with FPP regulations; advise on required compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Review fire protection system test plans submitted by contractors; witness operational tests of fire suppression and life‑safety systems to validate contractor acceptance.
  • Coach less experienced Fire Protection engineers through design, review, construction, operation, and maintenance activities.

Qualifications

Basic Engineer Requirement

  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program or a program that meets the required coursework criteria (statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical fields and circuits, or comparable science).
  • Combination of Education and Experience: Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of engineering sciences through professional registration, a written test (e.g., Fundamentals of Engineering), completion of required courses, or a related curriculum with at least one year of professional engineering experience under supervision.

Specialized Experience for GS‑13

  • One year of specialized experience including: applying expert FPP engineering principles to design and review of construction projects; creating and evaluating technical designs to ensure compliance with fire and life‑safety codes; conducting fire protection engineering surveys and inspections; establishing FPP engineering regulations and technical processes.

Professional License Desired

  • Current Professional Engineer license is highly desired and preferred. The license must be obtained by passing the fire protection engineering examination administered by NCEES.

Additional Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination (background investigation).
  • One‑year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a pre‑employment Selective Service Registration statement.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Compliance with the Exceptional Family Member Program (DoD Instruction  ).
  • Satisfy 26JUL12 DODI   V1230 (Employment in Foreign Areas).
  • Obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance or access for the duration of employment (background investigation and credit check).
  • Maintain a valid U.S. tourist and official passport for the duration of employment.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred.

Foreign Education

Foreign‑educated credentials must be evaluated by a private organization for equivalence to an accredited U.S. education program; full credit must be granted for equivalent courses.

  • The initial length of this overseas tour is 36 months.
  • This is an Engineers and Scientists Career Field position.
  • Defense National Relocation Program will not be authorized.
