Position Overview

Full‑time PhD (39.83 h per week) for three years at the Ruhr‑Universität Bochum, Chair of Artificial Intelligence & Formal Methods. Start date . Fixed‑term position. Salary according to the TV‑L collective agreement (E13).

Research Focus

The PhD will focus on decision‑making under uncertainty using complex Markov models. Key research areas include:

• Constraints, safety, and risk in partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs).
• Multi‑agent decision making via multi‑agent POMDPs and partially observable stochastic games.
• Sampling‑based approaches to solve POMDPs (MCTS, bandits).
• Complexity and semantics of robust POMDPs.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research in the areas listed above.
• Support the chair’s teaching program by leading exercises and organising seminars and lectures.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or Mathematics.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
• Background in at least one of: probabilistic model checking, decision theory under uncertainty, or probability theory.
