Gelation kinetics of alginate and other polysaccharides

Position title at Technische Universität München (TUM). The PhD position is in the experimental rheology group “Fluid Dynamics of Complex Biosystems” led by Prof. Dr. Natalie Germann.

About the research

The research group focuses on the rheology of viscoelastic fluids relevant to industry, such as wormlike micelles, polymer and biopolymer solutions. Their work investigates the link between rheology and microstructure, combining thermodynamic modeling and numerical simulation with laboratory experiments.

Your Project

  • Work on the DFG project “In situ real-time rheological characterization of alginate gelation.”
  • Characterize the rapid structural changes during gelation of polysaccharides by reliable real‑time rheological monitoring.
  • Study how polysaccharide concentration, Ca^2+/carboxylate molar ratio, cation type, and ionic strength influence gelation kinetics.
  • Modify the rheometer base to enable instant infusion of divalent cations into the samples.
  • Simultaneously record microstructural changes using optical microscopy.
  • Provide new insights that are industrially relevant for food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical applications.

Applicant Profile

  • Master’s degree in food technology, chemical engineering, material science or a related field.
  • Solid background in experimental rheology.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperate within an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Good communication skills; fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Professional German language skills to participate in teaching activities of the group.

Compensation and Duration

  • Salary according to the Public Sector Collective Agreement on Länder (TV‑L E13 50 %).
  • Position for an initial two‑year period with intention of continuation.
  • Salary increased by 25 % after the PhD student publishes one peer‑reviewed article and contributes to a competitive research proposal that receives funding.
