We are looking for a PhD candidate to advance the field of big data analytics and information management systems at Technische Universität Berlin.

About the University

The Institute for Software Engineering and Theoretical Computer Science is part of TU Berlin’s Faculty IV and is recognised for its work in database systems, information management, and scalable data analytics.

Research Focus

The main focus of this position is advancing database systems, big data analytics, and data science. The candidate will develop new theories and algorithms for information management with an emphasis on parallel and distributed processing systems.

Position Details

• Group: Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA)
• Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Markl
• Salary: grade 13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen
• Location: Einsteinufer 17, 10587 Berlin, Germany

Responsibilities

• Conduct research in database systems, big data analytics, and data science.
• Contribute to the development of information management theory and algorithms.
• Teach DIMA courses such as “Informationssysteme und Datenanalyse,” “Database Technology,” and “Scalable Data Science: Systems and Methods.”

Qualifications

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Business Informatics, or related field.
• In-depth knowledge of SQL databases and declarative query processing in data‑mining contexts.
• Strong programming skills in developing distributed and parallel databases and data‑analysis algorithms.
• Experience with open‑source projects (e.g., GitHub) and proficiency in Java, C/C++, or Python.
• Ability to teach in German and/or English (willingness to acquire missing language skills).
• Desirable: project‑management knowledge, teamwork experience, prior industrial internship.
