Germany – PhD in Neurobiology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg

Stellenbeschreibung:

About the University

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of Germany’s most prominent research-intensive universities. Located in Erlangen, Bavaria, it offers a vibrant scientific community and high quality of life.

Research Topic and Significance

The PhD position is part of an ERC-funded project in the Biointerfaces Lab at FAU, focused on wireless control and recording of neural signaling using magnetic nanomaterials. The goal is to develop magnetic nanointerfaces that convert external magnetic fields into precise mechanical or electrical stimuli for minimally invasive neural modulation.

Project Details

The successful candidate will join the Biointerfaces Lab, a highly interdisciplinary team with expertise in sensory sciences and bioengineering. The project is supported by the ERC and is part of the Horizon Europe research framework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain primary neural culture and slice systems, and related neurobiological models
  • Perform immunofluorescence staining and advanced fluorescence microscopy
  • Investigate neuronal and astrocytic signaling in CNS systems
  • Study wireless modulation of neural activity using magnetic nanomaterials through calcium imaging and MRI dynamics
  • Contribute to functional assays and neural recording experiments
  • Collaborate closely with researchers in materials science and bioengineering

Candidate Profile

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, neurobiology, biomedicine, or a closely related field
  • Experience with cell culture, particularly primary neuronal cultures and acute/organotypic slices
  • Proficiency in immunofluorescence and fluorescence imaging
  • Solid understanding of neurophysiology and neuronal signaling
  • Desirable: calcium imaging, patch-clamp electrophysiology, multi-electrode array (MEA) recordings, and work with CNS or PNS experimental models
  • Strong motivation, ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team, and excellent communication skills in English

Application Process

The application deadline is . Applicants must submit a single PDF file containing:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Motivation letter
  • Short outline of research interests relevant to the PhD position
  • Names and contact details of three referees

Applications are submitted via the official university job portal:
