Germany – PhD in Physics at Goethe University Frankfurt

Stellenbeschreibung:

University: Goethe University Frankfurt

Country: Germany

Deadline: 15 April 2026

Fields: Physics, Computational Physics, Chemical Physics, Biophysics, Computer Science

Position: PhD

Overview

Are you passionate about unraveling the fundamental mechanisms of radiation-induced biodamage and eager to contribute to innovations in particle therapy, radiotherapy, and radioprotection? A unique opportunity awaits you in Germany as part of a prestigious European Doctoral Network.

About the University and Research Institute

Goethe University Frankfurt, located in Frankfurt am Main, is one of Germany’s most respected research universities, founded in 1914. The MesoBioNano (MBN) Research Center, where the doctoral candidate will be employed, is internationally recognized for its multiscale theory and simulations of molecular and condensed matter systems exposed to radiation.

Research Topic and Significance

The project is embedded within the MSCA-DN “MS-RADAM” (MultiScale phenomena in RAdiation DAMage) initiative, funded through the Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Actions (MSCA) programme. It aims to advance our understanding of how ionising radiation induces biodamage at the nano- and larger scales, with profound implications for medicine, biology, and environmental science.

Project Details

The specific doctoral project, titled “Nanochemistry of irradiated biomacromolecular systems,” focuses on modelling radiation-induced chemical processes in biologically relevant environments using a computational multiscale approach. The candidate will employ reactive molecular dynamics, irradiation‑driven molecular dynamics, stochastic dynamics, and analytical modelling to explore ultrafast dynamics of reactive species formation and transport near ion tracks and radiosensitising nanoparticles, integrating theory with experimental validation.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the PhD programme at Goethe University Frankfurt, employed by the MBN Research Center. The position lasts 36 months, full-time, and includes extensive international mobility, secondments to partner organisations, and training in transferable skills such as research management and communication.

Candidate Profile

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in theoretical physics, computational physics, physical chemistry, biophysics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Proven experience with software tools for computer simulations, such as quantum chemistry calculations, molecular dynamics, or Monte Carlo simulations.
  • High motivation for research in theoretical and computational physics.
  • Excellent spoken and written English language skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally for project meetings, conferences, and training.
  • Capability to work reliably in a diverse, international environment and meet strict deadlines.
  • Compliance with the MSCA mobility rule: candidates must not have lived or worked in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to the recruitment date ).
  • No prior doctoral degree.
  • Willingness to undertake mandatory international mobility (minimum four months) during the project.

Candidates of all nationalities and genders are encouraged to apply, provided they meet the above criteria and the admission requirements for the PhD programme at Goethe University Frankfurt.

Application Process

The application deadline is 15 April 2026 (23:59 Europe/Berlin).

Applicants should submit the following documents as a single PDF file:

  • Full CV
  • Copy of the most recent diploma (Master’s or equivalent)
  • Copy of marks and grades
  • Letter of motivation
  • Two letters of recommendation
