Head of Engineering (m/f/d)

within Germany remotely or at one of our office locations.

In this role, you will lead the engineering vision for IU’s Website Platform and Services – a critical growth engine within the Marketing department. You will shape how we build fast, scalable, and high-converting digital experiences across multiple IU websites, enabling millions of prospective students to discover, evaluate, and choose the right educational path.

Your tasks

Lead two empowered, cross-functional product teams (Frontend, Backend, Platform) responsible for IU’s Website Platform used across four major IU websites.

Co-create with Tech Leads and Staff+ Engineers the technical vision and architecture of a headless web platform built on

Storyblok (CMS), Laravel services, and Vue.js frontends , ensuring scalability, security, maintainability, and sustainable evolution.

Drive

speed, performance, SEO, and GEO optimization

as core business levers for traffic growth and conversion.

Partner closely with Product Owners, UX, Marketing, and Growth stakeholders to

translate business goals into measurable product and engineering outcomes , enabling empowered teams to make strong product decisions.

Collaborate with Salesforce and data platform teams to

ensure reliable, high-quality data flows across systems

and customer touchpoints.

Embed

personalization and AI-powered features

across the customer journey to improve relevance, decision support, and conversion.

Champion

excellent developer experience, modern delivery practices, and high engineering standards

(CI/CD, code quality, observability, performance monitoring).

Your Profile

5+ years of experience in engineering leadership, ideally within

digital agencies, MarTech, e-commerce, or high-traffic web platforms .

Strong affinity for

marketing-driven products , conversion optimization, UX, and growth-oriented engineering.

Deep technical background in

modern web architectures, headless CMS setups, frontend frameworks, APIs, and cloud-native environments .

Proven experience building and scaling high-performance websites with strong focus on

page speed, SEO, accessibility, and reliability .

Experience working with complex system landscapes and external dependencies (e.g., CRM platforms like Salesforce).

Strong product mindset : comfortable working in empowered product teams and collaborating closely with Product Owners, Design, and Marketing.

Hands‑on exposure to

personalization, experimentation, data-driven optimization, and AI-powered customer experiences

is a strong plus.

Ability to balance strategic technical vision with pragmatic delivery and operational excellence.

Excellent communication skills in English; German is a plus.
