Intern/Master Thesis Student - Privacy and Security for Large Language Models

The Data Protection Lab , based in Düsseldorf, investigates the security and privacy of current large language and vision models and provides practical solutions for developing LLM-based, security- and privacy-focused approaches. To support our research activities, we are seeking enthusiastic and highly motivated students. In this role, the student will contribute to the research and development of practical solutions involving security and privacy techniques to create secure LLMs. The work may also include applications of large language and vision models in the domain of privacy and security.

Your mission

• Review prior work related to relevant research topics.
• Develop novel algorithms for privacy-preserving LLMs.
• Create solutions that use LLMs to address privacy- or security-related issues.
• Implement and empirically evaluate the developed methods on public and/or industrial datasets.
• Document findings and results with rigor.

Your areas of expertise

• Currently enrolled as a Bachelor’s or Master’s student in computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, or a related field.
• Solid knowledge and practical experience in machine learning and deep learning, including programming skills in Python and at least one deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX).
• Experience with vision or NLP tasks in general, and large language models specifically.
• Proactive and self-motivated mindset, with a willingness to take initiative and responsibility for projects.
• Fluent in written and spoken English.
• Prior knowledge of privacy and security aspects of LLMs, as well as applications of LLMs for security is a plus.
• Knowledge of and practical experience with setting up and evaluating AI agents is a plus.
