Internship - Engine Controller Software

Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.

At the core of every spacecraft lies its engine. To master this key component, we are building our own state-of-the-art Propulsion Systems , ensuring maximum efficiency, reliability, and performance for our missions.

We are now seeking a highly motivated Intern to join our Propulsion Systems Division in Munich . In this role, you will help develop custom, reliable, and high-performance software that drives our cryogenic engine .

Key Responsibilities:

As an Intern in the Engine Controller System team , you will be directly involved in the development of our embedded software stack for the cryogenic engine. This role will evolve over time, but typical responsibilities include:

• Developing low-level drivers to interface application software with in-house developed hardware.
• Implementing and testing communication stacks between subsystems (CAN, UART, SPI, Ethernet).
• Performing hands‑on testing, troubleshooting, and writing clear technical documentation.
• Contributing to unit testing, static analysis, and integration tests to improve software reliability.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Master (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related technical field.
• Solid foundation in C programming for microcontroller and embedded systems development.
• Experience and understanding of real‑time operating systems (RTOS) is a plus.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
• Experience in Python scripting.
• Curious, organized, and able to drive a project autonomously while communicating within a fast‑moving team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Prior involvement in a student rocket, Formula Student, or robotics project is nice to have.
