Responsibilities

  • Supervise children and youth aged 6 weeks to 18 years during the daily schedule of indoor and outdoor activities, field trips, outings, and special events.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct activities for program participants based on observed needs of individual children and youth. Prepare and implement program options for children and youth with special requirements.
  • Instruct team members in specific tasks and job techniques; provide written instructions, reference materials, and supplies. Explain program guidance, procedures, policies, and directives to team members.
  • Use designated evaluation materials to ensure the assigned area complies with Department of Defense (DoD) and local installation standards. Maintain standards for DoD certification and national accreditation or equivalent.
  • Complete training requirements using approved service materials, including designated training modules. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

  • One‑year probationary period may be required.
  • Minimum age of 18 years at the time of employment.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre‑employment background checks per AR 215‑3, para. 2, and a Child Care Tier 1 background investigation.
  • Submit a current health assessment documenting good mental and physical health, freedom from communicable disease, and up-to-date immunizations including annual influenza vaccinations, in accordance with current Army and DoD policy.
  • For positions in Child Development Centers, possess the physical ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs., walk, bend, stoop, and stand routinely.
  • Report all suspected incidents of child abuse or neglect, as legally required.
  • Administer routine and rescue medications prescribed by a physician to children/youth, perform CPR and first aid, and provide reasonable accommodations to children/youth with special needs.
  • Travel to on‑post and off‑post locations may be required.
  • Schedule may include irregular hours, evenings, and/or weekends. Duties involve working both indoors and outdoors.
  • Successful completion of Lead Foundation Level training and annual training requirements is required.

Qualifications

  • All Candidates Must
    • Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
    • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • In Addition, Candidates Must Meet One Of The Following
    • Possess and maintain a directly related credential to the age group assigned, such as Child Development Associate (CDA), Military School‑Age Credential, Army Youth Practicum, or another nationally recognized Youth Development Credential.
    • Two years of specialized experience working in a group program with children or youth plus an associate’s degree or at least 60 semester hours with a major course of study (24 semester hours) directly related to the age group to which assigned (examples include Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Special Education, Behavioral or Cultural Science such as Developmental Psychology, Child Psychology/Sociology, or related fields).
    • A bachelor’s degree or at least 120 semester hours with a major course of study (24 semester hours) directly related to the age group to which assigned.
    • 24 months (2 years) of work in a group childcare or youth program with completion of DoD‑approved competency training courses, evidenced by service‑issued documentation.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience assisting with childcare or youth program national accreditation processes.
    • Experience participating in multi‑disciplinary or higher‑level child/youth program inspections.
    • Experience working with varying age groups (early childhood, school age, youth).
    • Experience leading or mentoring lower‑level childcare/youth program staff.

Education

  • Proof of education is required at the time of application. Education must be directly related to the position. General education courses do not count toward the credit total.
  • If qualifying via DoD‑approved competency training courses, you must provide one of the following:
    • A completed Foundation IDP signed by both employee and supervisor/training specialist.
    • A signed Foundation (or equivalent) certificate.
    • A memorandum stating completion of Foundation training from a supervisor or CYS Training Specialist that contains the full name, title, and contact information.
