Lead HVDC Control & Protection System Engineer (w/m/d)

HVDC Control & Protection: Dynamic Performance Study, Protection Coordination Study, AC/DC Interaction Study, Harmonic Stability Performance, PSCAD, RSCAD

What You’ll Do

  • Core Engineering Responsibilities:
    • Lead the design, implementation, and verification of HVDC control and protection systems.
    • EMT modelling of HVDC systems, AC network equivalents, and renewable systems (wind parks, solar PV, etc.) in PSCAD.
    • Convert or model AC network equivalents in RSCAD and interface with control and protection hardware equipment to validate systems.
  • System Analysis & Optimization:
    • Analyze and improve performance through dynamic performance studies, protection coordination, AC/DC interaction, and harmonic stability performance.
  • Business Support Activities:
    • Support tendering, operations, contractual, and after‑sales activities through analysis of requirements and system modelling in PSCAD and RTDS.
    • Conduct dynamic performance studies using online and offline simulation tools.
    • Model renewable AC networks in PSCAD and RSCAD and convert PSS/E AC networks to PSCAD models.
  • Technical Leadership:
    • Lead design reviews, identify project risks, propose solutions, and ensure requirements are met.
    • Support improvements to algorithms, strategies for fault recovery, and new control, protection, and sequencing strategies.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Introduce new tools and methods, promote a standard product methodology, and encourage reuse and collaboration across projects.

Essential Requirements

  • Education & Experience: Engineering degree or equivalent in power systems or power electronics, or proven experience in HVDC business.
  • Technical Experience: Demonstrated design, implementation, and verification of HVDC control and protection systems.
  • Technical Skills: Understanding of AC/HVDC interactions, HVDC control, protection, sequencing; proficiency with PSCAD and RSCAD; experience in system modelling and analysis.
  • Professional Skills: Excellent communication and client engagement; strong written and verbal communication in English; ability to create and present technical reports; ability to respond to client questions; risk management skill.
  • Work Style: Results‑driven, adaptable, able to work under pressure while maintaining safety, quality, and engineering integrity; flexible hours and willing to travel globally.

Alternative Experience Welcome

  • Strong background in power system studies, dynamic performance analysis, PSCAD or similar tools.
  • Experience with RMS/EMT studies, grid code compliance, and network stability analysis.
  • Application areas such as wind farm integration, HVDC VSC systems, or LLC systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Process improvement or Root Cause Analysis (RCA) experience or certification.
  • Experience defining requirements and ensuring best‑practice adherence.
  • Technical leadership experience.
  • Previous experience working in HVDC industry.
