What To Expect
Tesla’s drive unit development team is looking for a skilled and motivated team lead to guide (power) electronic/electrical engineers pushing the power electronics propelling our vehicles to the next level. The team is presently working to improve the current - and design the next - generation of traction inverters and you will ensure project targets are met, while coordinating, assisting, and motivating the team wherever needed. It's an exciting work environment with plenty of engineering resources and bright colleagues to collaborate with. As an industry leading company, Tesla offers the opportunity to work on bleeding edge technology in a fast paced, dynamic, and high visibility role.
What You'll Do
Be the point of contact for any internal/external technical/organizational topics within the team. Identify and solve restrictions in daily work, define long term development plans, and everything in between, while motivating the team through challenges. Start to finish ownership of traction inverter hardware (PCBA and/or power stage) from specification to design, simulation, prototype, validation, and support high-volume manufacturing and field studies. Collaborate with mechanical, manufacturing, test, and control/firmware engineering teams to successfully design, validate, and manufacture traction inverters.
What You'll Bring
M.Sc./Ph.D. in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and evidence of exceptional ability. 4 or more years of relevant hands-on hardware experience with designing and testing wide band-gap high voltage power converters and power stages, while managing a team of engineers. Relevant hands-on experience with designing and testing power PCBA (integrated circuits, gate drivers, sensors/signal conditioning, power supplies) and proficiency with laboratory equipment. Strong fundamentals of power semiconductors (switching waveforms, loss mechanisms) and passive electronic components (capacitor, inductors, and transformers) – modelling and selection.
Additional Preferred Skills
Understanding of traction inverters design trade-offs in automotive and with respect to electric motors. Experience with power converter design for high-volume automotive applications. Working knowledge of Matlab and/or Python. Knowledge in environmental, reliability, and safety requirements for automotive applications.
