Low Carbon Fuels Senior Advisor - 33829

Are you passionate about the decarbonisation of our industry and energy sectors? As industrial sectors plan their transition to Net Zero, new substitutes for fossil fuels are emerging particularly where hydrogen or electrification are not viable. We are looking for a Senior Advisor for a 12-month fixed‑term appointment to lead our work in preparing to regulate the production and use of these low carbon fuels (LCFs).

LCF production and combustion can differ significantly from traditional fossil fuel processes, bringing new environmental risks and regulatory challenges. We need to gather evidence, develop standards, write guidance and build regulatory tools to ensure these technologies can be deployed safely and effectively. Your work will help ensure that the energy sector continues to operate in a way that protects people and the environment from harmful emissions, while supporting mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

What You’ll Do

• Provide specialist advice on LCF production, combustion and environmental impacts.
• Develop regulatory standards, guidance and tools for new fuel technologies.
• Support permitting teams on complex cases involving ammonia, SAF, hydrogen and other alternative fuels.
• Work with DfT, DESNZ, Defra and others through briefings, working groups and cross‑government collaboration.
• Build partnerships with universities, research organisations and industry bodies.
• Represent the Environment Agency in national forums on LCF and decarbonisation.
