Master Thesis - Conceptual Integration of the District Level into Agent-Based Energy Market Sim[...]

Stellenbeschreibung:

At the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems - Energy Systems Engineering (ICE-1) we focus on the optimal design and operation of integrated, decentralized energy systems with a high share of renewable energy. Computer simulation and numerical optimization are our essential tools to arrive at efficient, reliable, and cost-effective solutions. We contribute both to the development of mathematical models and to the development of improved simulation methods and optimization algorithms. Our methods and software-tools are validated against operating data of real systems. Furthermore, we conduct comprehensive case studies in order to test and further improve the scalability and the performance of our models and algorithms. Specially adapted methods and codes enable us to exploit the potential of high-performance computing with the aim of solving particularly large and complex problems.

Your Job:

As part of this master’s thesis, the agent-based energy market simulation ASSUME should be expanded to include the local neighborhood. The goal is to further develop the existing simulation environment so that issues at the interface between the electricity markets, end customer supply, and decentralized energy systems can be investigated. To this end, suitable models and methods are to be identified, designed, and integrated into ASSUME.
One focus of the thesis is on linking different levels of analysis within the simulation. On this basis, various tariff and bidding approaches are to be investigated in suitable scenarios and evaluated with regard to selected energy-related and system-related parameters.
This results in the following work packages in particular:

  • Familiarization with the ASSUME toolbox and the underlying problem
  • Literature research on relevant topics from the electricity market, end customer supply, and decentralized energy systems
  • Analysis of the requirements for expanding ASSUME to the neighborhood level
  • Design of suitable modeling approaches for the intended system expansion
  • Development and integration of new functionalities into the existing simulation environment
  • Development and parameterization of suitable investigation and simulation scenarios
  • Conducting and evaluating analyses of different tariff and bidding approaches
  • Evaluation of the results using suitable parameters
  • Documentation, interpretation, and scientific classification of the results

Your Profile:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in a relevant field such as energy engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, industrial engineering, or a comparable field (Master’s degree)
  • Knowledge of modeling, optimization, and data analysis of energy systems
  • Interest in electricity markets, energy system analysis, and model-based studies
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (preferably Python)
  • Independent and structured way of working
  • Strong English skills; German skills are an advantage

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:

  • SCIENTIFIC ENVIRONMENT: You can expect excellent academic facilities, modern technologies and expert guidance from experienced colleagues
  • PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: With us, you will gain valuable practical experience alongside your studies, actively participate in interdisciplinary projects and have access to state-of-the-art simulation and analysis tools
