Master thesis "Scale-Up of AEM CO2 Electrolysis: Single-Cell Optimization and Test Rig Development"

Stellenbeschreibung:

We want an earth that is worth living on. Our applied research in Circular Economy, Carbon Management, Green Hydrogen and Local Energy Systems makes concrete contributions to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. As an institute of the Fraunhofer‑Gesellschaft, we show how to not only master challenges, but grow with them. We push boundaries, think ahead and shape the future with applied research. Diverse perspectives and approaches strengthen creativity and innovation in our scientific work.

Would you like to help us shape a sustainable world? We are looking for reinforcement!

The department "Power-to-Chemicals: Stacks and Pilot Systems" researches and develops electrochemical processes for utilizing CO2 as a feedstock. Your thesis will focus on the scale‑up of AEM CO₂ electrolysis, selectively converting CO₂ into carbon monoxide. By transitioning from single‑cell development and optimization to the integration of the large‑scale cell into the test rig, the project aims to bridge the gap between laboratory research and industrial‑scale stacks to enable a closed carbon cycle.

Be part of change

  • Investigation of operating parameters, such as temperature and differential pressure, to determine their effects on the electrochemical performance of AEM CO₂ electrolysis
  • Active participation in the technical ramp‑up and initial operation of the high‑pressure electrolysis test rig
  • Investigating the performance differences between lab‑scale cells and large‑scale stacks to identify loss mechanisms during the scale‑up process
  • Quantification of generated products and gas crossover to establish a complete mass balance
  • Independent execution and evaluation of experimental measurements and presentation of experimental results and technical findings at internal meetings and scientific seminars

What you contribute

  • Master’s studies in Chemical engineering, Energy and process engineering, Environmental engineering, or a comparable field of study
  • Confidence and safety awareness when working in a laboratory and pilot plant
  • Knowledge of electrolysis technologies (preferably in AEM) and/or pilot‑scale engineering
  • A proactive attitude and a strong interest in exploring and optimizing cutting‑edge electrochemical technologies
  • Ability to work independently
