Master's thesis (f/m/x): SLAM and Perception on Inland Waterways

The DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation is dedicated to mission-oriented research in selected areas of communications and navigation. Its work ranges from the theoretical foundations to the demonstration of new procedures and systems in a real environment and is embedded in DLR's Space, Aeronautics, Transport, Security and Digitalization programs.

What To Expect

The Nautical Systems department of the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation develops and tests new procedures and technologies for shore-based and on-board support in ship navigation, among other things. The working group develops methods for precise environment perception, mapping and navigation for vessels on inland waterways and in ports.

You will work in an interdisciplinary research team on methods for SLAM, HD mapping and environment perception on inland waterways – using data from LiDAR, cameras, radar and GNSS as well as modern hardware and software. You will receive continuous support, can contribute your own ideas and have the opportunity to incorporate your results into publications or real-world demonstrators on our research vessels.

Your tasks

• literature review and familiarization with state-of-the-art SLAM, HD mapping and perception methods for inland waterways
• design and prototype implementation of SLAM and mapping algorithms based on LiDAR, camera, radar and/or GNSS data (e.g. in ROS/ROS2)
• analysis of existing measurement data (synchronization, filtering, calibration) and investigation of typical scenarios such as bridges, locks, quay walls, vegetated banks and mixed traffic
• analyze the results and assess them using suitable metrics (e.g. trajectory error, map quality, robustness)
• document the developed methods, maintain the source code and present your results in the thesis and in team meetings
• optionally support field tests on research vessels.

Your profile

• enrolled in a master's programme in computer science, robotics, electrical engineering/communications engineering, mechatronics or a comparable field of study
• good programming skills in C++ and/or Python as well as confident use of Linux
• initial experience with ROS or ROS2
• basic understanding of SLAM, state/trajectory estimation or probabilistic robotics and interest in algorithms for perception and mapping
• knowledge of at least one relevant sensor type (e.g. LiDAR, camera, radar or GNSS/INS)
• independent, structured way of working with a passion for collaboration in an interdisciplinary, international team
• german language skills and good written and spoken English
