Do you want to engineer compact, high-performance magnetic solutions for next-generation power systems?
Noratel is strengthening its advanced R&D capabilities and is looking for an experienced R&D Engineer – Mechanical Engineering to join our Medium Frequency (MF) development team.
In this role, you will be responsible for translating electrical performance and system requirements into robust, compact, and manufacturable mechanical architectures for transformers and magnetic components operating in the 5–500 kW range and 2–80 kHz frequency .
You will work at the intersection of mechanical design, thermal management, materials engineering, and industrialization , contributing to solutions that maximize power density, reliability, and scalability in demanding applications.
Role Purpose
Responsible for developing compact, manufacturable, thermally efficient, and cost-optimized medium-frequency (MF) magnetic solutions.
The role translates electrical performance and customer system constraints into mechanical architectures that ensure performance, reliability, compliance, and industrial competitiveness—while supporting efficient production and time-to-market.
Key Responsibilities1. Mechanical Architecture & Packaging
- Lead mechanical architecture, packaging, and structural design of MF transformers and magnetic assemblies
- Define optimized form factors, enclosures, mounting strategies, and insulation systems
- Ensure alignment with customer constraints (space, cooling, environment)
- Guarantee mechanical support for electrical behavior, thermal paths, acoustic performance, and safety
2. Thermal Performance & Power Density
- Own thermal design and optimization (conduction, convection, interfaces, materials)
- Perform and interpret thermal simulations and correlate with testing results
- Develop cooling concepts (air, liquid, hybrid) to enable high power density
3. Manufacturability & Industrialization
- Drive DFM, DFA, and design-to-cost from early concept phase
- Develop scalable manufacturing concepts, tooling strategies, and automation-ready designs
- Balance performance and cost through smart design and material choices
- Perform DFMEA and PFMEA to ensure robust product and process design
- Apply knowledge of MF magnetic core materials (ferrite, nanocrystalline, amorphous)
- Work with advanced conductor technologies (Litz wire, foil, multi-strand, shaped conductors)
- Evaluate materials (metals, plastics, composites, insulation, adhesives) for performance, reliability, and cost
5. Acoustic, Structural & Reliability Performance
- Address noise and vibration issues related to magnetostriction and structural dynamics
- Ensure compliance with lifetime, fatigue, shock, vibration, and environmental requirements
6. Validation, Compliance & Documentation
- Support prototype testing and validation (thermal, acoustic, mechanical performance)
- Ensure compliance with customer and international standards
- Create drawings, BOMs, and production documentation for global manufacturing
- Work closely with electrical engineers and system architects
- Engage with customers to understand real-world constraints and applications
- Act as a mechanical authority within the MF development team
Qualifications & Experience
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical design for magnetics, power electronics, or high-power systems
- Strong expertise in compact design, thermal management, and cost-driven engineering
- Experience with manufacturing processes and scalable product development
- Knowledge of MF magnetic materials and conductor technologies
- Solid understanding of insulation systems and regulatory requirements
- Proficiency in CAD tools (e.g. Autodesk Inventor); FEM/simulation experience is an advantage
- Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a practical, production-oriented mindset
- Ability to work cross-functionally and communicate effectively with stakeholders and customers
- High level of ownership, independence, and motivation
