The Leibniz‑Institut für Analytische Wissenschaften – ISAS – e. V. develops efficient analytical methods for health research. Thus, it contributes to the improvement of the prevention, early diagnosis, and therapy of diseases like cardiovascular diseases or cancer. Overall, the institute strives to advance precision medicine by combining knowledge from different fields such as biology, chemistry, computer science, medicine, pharmacology, and physics. ISAS is a member of the Leibniz Association and is publicly funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and its federal states.

Four PhD Candidates (m/f/d)

In the departments Bioanalytic and Biospectroscopy, we invite applications for:

PhD Position 1 “Preclinical Models” (65%, Bioimaging Group) Ref. Number: 395_2026

You will be responsible for:

  • Analysis of murine tissue samples (heart and tumor tissue) to determine their immune cell infiltration profiles
  • 3D imaging analyses using fluorescence microscopy techniques (e.g., confocal laser scanning microscopy, light‑sheet fluorescence microscopy)
  • MALDI MSI, laser microdissection MS, and LC‑MS analyses to identify metabolite, lipid, and protein profiles in murine tissue and blood
  • Evaluation, analysis, and visualization of data
  • Documentation of laboratory work
  • Collaboration with project partners and regular presentation of results

Your profile:

  • M.Sc. or a degree in a natural science field (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics) or a comparable qualification (e.g., pharmacy, food technology)
  • Experience in a laboratory setting, ideally in bioanalytics, imaging, or immunology
  • Practical knowledge of mass spectrometry and/or microscopy
  • A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work, the ability to work in a team, an open‑minded attitude, and a commitment to the work are required
  • Strong communication skills, organisational talent and a solution‑oriented approach
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Willingness to travel for work
  • Excellent written and spoken English; German would be an advantage

PhD Position 2 “Omics‑based analysis of human cohorts” (65%, Proteomics Group) Ref. Number: 396_2026

You will be responsible for:

  • Conducting proteomic analyses of blood, plasma, and tissue samples from melanoma and other cancer patients
  • Developing bioanalytical assays for protein‑based biomarker screening
  • Developing and validating combined biomarker panels for cardio‑oncological risk assessment
  • Evaluation, analysis, and visualization of data
  • Documentation of laboratory work
  • Collaboration with project partners and regular presentation of results

Your profile:

  • M.Sc. or a degree in a natural science field (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics) or a comparable qualification (e.g., pharmacy, food technology)
  • Experience in a laboratory setting, ideally in bioanalytics, imaging, or immunology
  • Practical knowledge of mass spectrometry and/or microscopy
  • A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work, the ability to work in a team, an open‑minded attitude, and a commitment to the work are required

PhD Position 3 “Image‑based analysis of human cohorts” (65%, Lipidomics Group) Ref. Number: 397_2026

You will be responsible for:

  • Analysis of longitudinal blood, plasma, and tissue samples from melanoma and other cancer patients
  • Development of targeted metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics assays
  • Validation of biomarkers using MALDI‑MSI and LC‑MS analyses in human tissue samples
  • Evaluation, analysis, and visualization of data
  • Documentation of laboratory work
  • Collaboration with project partners and regular presentation of results

Your profile:

  • M.Sc. or a degree in a natural science field (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics) or a comparable qualification (e.g., pharmacy, food technology)
  • Experience in a laboratory setting, ideally in bioanalytics, imaging, or immunology
  • Practical knowledge of mass spectrometry and/or microscopy
  • A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work, the ability to work in a team, an open‑minded attitude, and a commitment to the work are required

PhD Position 4 “Data Science” (100%, Multidimensional OMICS Data Analysis Group) Ref. Number: 398_2026

You will be responsible for:

  • Analysis of phenotypic, microscopic, PET/MRI, MALDI‑MSI, and LC‑MS/MS data
  • Development of AI‑based models for personalized risk assessment
  • Validation and application of model performance using established biomarkers and patient cohorts
  • Evaluation, analysis, and visualization of data
  • Documentation of laboratory work
  • Collaboration with project partners and regular presentation of results

Your profile:

  • M.Sc. or Diploma in bioinformatics or a comparable qualification
  • Extensive programming experience
  • Practical experience in machine learning and the application of large language models
  • Knowledge of OMICS and image data analysis
  • A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work, the ability to work in a team, an open‑minded attitude, and a commitment to the work are required
  • Strong communication skills, organisational talent and a solution‑oriented approach
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Willingness to travel for work
  • Excellent written and spoken English; German would be an advantage
