Natural scientist, engineer (f/m/x) - Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Overview

At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and make them adaptable, safe and sustainable. In close cooperation with partners from research, industry and other maritime security stakeholders, we combine technological innovation with practical expertise and offer you the opportunity to work on pioneering projects.

Your tasks

• research and development of analysis methods for signal detection (e.g. ship crossings) and characterization (e.g. directionality, ship parameters) in DAS data
• sensitivity studies, investigation of the influence of environmental and technical parameters
• development of suitable filter techniques and compression for large DAS data sets
• planning, setting up and operating DAS networks in long-term installations and carrying out test campaigns
• analyzing and evaluating the data obtained during field tests and long-term installations
• publication of research results in scientific journals and at conferences

Your profile

• completed university degree (Master's/Diploma) in natural sciences (e.g. physics, geophysics, oceanography), engineering (e.g. photonics, electrical engineering) or other relevant fields
• knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Fibre-optic sensors, especially Optical Time Domain Reflectrometry and Distributed Acoustic Sensing, underwater acoustics, seismic data analysis
• good knowledge of digital signal processing techniques
• basic knowledge of machine learning and artificial intelligence methods
• experience in conducting and analyzing experiments and measurement campaigns, incl. willingness and ability for experimental testing of methods and systems in the field and at sea
• programming skills (e.g. Python, C++)
• very good written and spoken English skills

Remuneration is based on qualifications and assigned duties, up to pay grade E13 TVöD.
