Stellenbeschreibung:

PhD Application (m/f/x), 3 years, 67% position, TV-L E13

Application deadline: .

Our research focuses on developing simple catalytic "dream reactions" as alternatives to multi-step transformations. We aim to devise new strategies for minimizing waste within a synthetic sequence. Our portfolio includes homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry, and photochemistry. We develop catalytic methods, design novel catalysts, and construct custom-built reactors, hardware, and software tools for instrumental analysis. Experimental work is complemented by mechanistic studies, quantum mechanical calculations, and organic syntheses that test the applicability of new methods in producing complex molecules such as pharmaceuticals.

Your tasks

  • Design and perform experiments in the field of homogeneous catalysis using Pd and Ni precatalysts.
  • Synthesize and characterize transition metal complexes and ligands.
  • Investigate reaction mechanisms using modern spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR, UV-Vis).
  • Optimize catalytic reaction conditions (temperature, solvent, catalyst loading).
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Apply chromatographic and analytical techniques (GC, HPLC, MS) for product analysis.
  • Contribute to the development of new catalytic systems for selective transformations.
  • Conduct literature research in homogeneous catalysis and related fields.
  • Present research findings in group meetings and scientific conferences.
  • Prepare scientific reports and manuscripts in English.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (organic, inorganic, and theoretical chemistry).
  • Adhere to laboratory safety regulations and maintain group equipment.
  • Supervise a laboratory assistant for organic chemistry practical courses for bachelor studies (600 hours in three years).

Your profile

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry with a focus on inorganic, organometallic, or organic chemistry.
  • Solid background in homogeneous catalysis, coordination chemistry, or related fields.
  • Practical experience with air- and moisture-sensitive techniques (Schlenk line, glovebox).
  • Proficiency in synthesis and characterization of chemical compounds.
  • Hands‑on experience with analytical and spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR, UV-Vis, GC, HPLC, MS).
  • Strong understanding of reaction mechanisms and catalytic processes.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a structured, analytical working style.
  • High level of motivation and curiosity for scientific research.
  • Good communication skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • Experience in scientific writing and presentation of research results.

We offer

  • Fully funded PhD position with a competitive salary according to TV-L regulations.
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and modern laboratory infrastructure.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects in homogeneous catalysis and organometallic chemistry.
  • Close supervision and mentorship within a dynamic and supportive research group.
  • Integration into an international and interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Opportunities to present research at national and international conferences.
  • Support for publishing research results in high-impact scientific journals.
  • Access to advanced training programs, workshops, and transferable skills courses.

Further information

The position is salaried according to the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E 13 TV-L.
