Background

The EU project OceanGardens addresses climate change and the protection of marine ecosystems, both of which require urgent and scalable solutions. The reliance on land-based biomass for biofuels and bioplastics is unsustainable due to competition for arable land, freshwater, and fertilizers. Seaweed aquaculture presents a game-changing opportunity to decarbonize the transportation and chemical industries while enhancing marine biodiversity. The Ocean Gardens project pioneers offshore regenerative seaweed farming across European waters, demonstrating its feasibility, environmental benefits, and economic viability. This project focuses on cultivating diverse native seaweed species using innovative floating techniques in the open ocean. Datasets and reports on biodiversity enhancement, carbon uptake and nutrient bioremediation of the aquafarm will be available under FAIR principles, fostering further research and replication.

Your Tasks

• Quantify benthic biogeochemical fluxes in situ using technologies such as eddy covariance, micro-profiling and chamber incubations
• Perform sediment solid-phase and porewater analyses
• Coordinate shipment, maintenance and servicing of equipment
• Participate in field trips under varying environmental conditions
• Present scientific results at conferences and workshops
• Publish findings in peer-reviewed international journals
• Collaborate closely with project partners on data synthesis and ecosystem modelling

Your Profile

• M.Sc. or diploma in environmental sciences, marine biogeochemistry, or a related discipline
• Very good knowledge in English (approximately equivalent to CEFR level C1)
• Willingness to conduct fieldwork under challenging conditions
• Interest in developing and applying in situ technology
• High motivation for collaborative, interdisciplinary research
