The Innovative Electron Microscopy Department develops and applies electron microscopy methodologies for nanoscale and atomic-resolution characterization of functional materials and their interfaces, with specific focus on soft-hard interfaces.
We are seeking an
Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is nowadays routinely performed in scanning transmission electron microscopes, enabling chemical characterization of materials at the nanoscale. However, as a characterization technique for studying soft functional materials (polymers, organic crystals, coordination frameworks, etc.), EELS remains largely underutilized. The main goal of the project is to develop approaches for the chemical characterization/imaging of soft functional materials and their interfaces at the nano/atomic scale making use of information from different regions of EELS spectra. In this project you will combine state-of-the-art materials science and cryo-electron microscopy workflows, as well as apply ab initio calculations (in close cooperation with other members of the E-MOSAIC project team) to support the detailed interpretation of spectroscopical data, in order to understand the relationship between chemical composition, electronic structure and functional properties of studied compounds.
