Postgraduate Students and Postdoc Scholarships

Each year, the GHIL awards a number of research scholarships to postgraduate students, Habilitanden and postdocs at German universities to enable them to carry out research in Britain. Scholarships are generally awarded for a period of up to three months (only full months), depending on the requirements of the research project.

Once a year, the Max Weber Foundation confers Gerald D. Feldman Travel Grants on young academics with an international focus. These grants are supported by the Peters Beer Foundation and the Marga und Kurt Möllgaard Foundation, both part of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.

Visiting Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

The Institute of Advanced Studies, University College London and the German Historical Institute London annually appoint a joint Stipendiary Visiting Postdoctoral Research Fellow, tenable for a period of six months. The purpose of the Visiting Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is to offer an outstanding early-career scholar from a German university the opportunity to pursue independent research in the stimulating intellectual environment of the two host institutions.

GHIL-MWF Joint Fellowship on The British Empire and the History of Colonialism

The GHI London-India Research Programme and the Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies New Delhi invite applications for their joint fellowship for early career scholars whose research is situated in the broad field of the British Empire and the History of Colonialism.

The fellowship is open to post-doctoral/early career scholars from universities and other academic research institutions in Germany who wish to spend time in the UK and India for any of the following purposes:

• Preparing for a research project
• Archival visits
• Networking with scholars in India and the UK
