Stellenbeschreibung:

Postdoc (f/m/d) in Physics

Overview

The Undulator Group is in charge of the design, construction, installation and operation of permanent magnet insertion devices at BESSY II storage ring and its future successor. Meeting the user demands in terms of spectral properties and polarization with means of high performance insertion devices, while avoiding the undesired impact of the magnetic structures on the electron beam, is the mission of the group. In order to take full advantage of the novel concepts and advanced developments in storage ring design the corresponding insertion devices have to be developed further as well. Moreover, novel undulator schemes and improved insertion device performance trigger new schemes and advanced upgrades for synchrotron light sources. Thus, the Undulator Group and its environment provide exciting opportunities for research. The Undulator Group is seeking a physicist to contribute to the theoretical/numerical and physics aspects of the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of in-vacuum permanent magnet insertion devices (IDs) at HZB.

Your Tasks

  • Determination of the impedances of components or complete in-vacuum undulators using numerical and experimental methods to optimize or reduce their impedance contribution in the storage ring
  • Support and guidance for the design and construction of in-vacuum undulators with regard to impedance reduction
  • Contribution to the operation of in-vacuum undulators, in particular with respect to measurement and optimization of their impedance contribution
  • Contribution to the design of undulators for BESSY II and the future facility BESSY III
  • Development of design and operating guidelines that contribute to impedance reduction in the storage ring
  • Publication of scientific and technical results

Your Profile

As our ideal candidate, you have a proven track record in measuring and determining the impedance of in-vacuum undulators and accelerator components.

The essential requirements for this position are:

  • A doctorate in physics or a closely related discipline
  • Proven experience and in-depth knowledge of the experimental determination and numerical calculation of impedances, as well as undulator technology and accelerator physics
  • Oral and written communication skills in English or German at least at B2/C1 level
  • Ability to interact with students, staff, and facility users at all levels and to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work on your own initiative and take projects to completion
  • Enthusiasm for physics and a strong curiosity to discover new and improved methods for undulator design

Desirable qualities

  • Experience using modern software to calculate impedances (e.g. CST Studio Suite)
  • Experience with computer codes for magnetic modelling
  • Experience with computer codes for calculating synchrotron radiation and particle accelerator dynamics
  • Experience in operating particle accelerator facilities
  • Knowledge of the programming languages Fortran and Python

Your Benefits at HZB

  • The opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to work remotely
  • Career-enhancing networking opportunities, individual guidance, and support through our Graduate Centre and Postdoc Office
  • 30 days of vacation per year and attractive remuneration according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund), plus company pension plan and capital forming benefits
  • Advisory services on family and career matters through our Office for Work & Life
  • Subsidy for public transport “Deutschlandticket Job” and exclusive employee discounts
  • Relocation support from non-EU countries
  • German courses for all proficiency levels

Fixed term contract for 36 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).
