Technische Universität München (Technical University of Munich)

Postdoctoral fellow in non-invasive optoacoustic sensing (f/m/d)

Stellenbeschreibung:

Overview

We now seek a highly qualified and motivated Post-doctoral researcher (f/m/d/x) to drive the development of methods for optoacoustic data analysis. The Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich and the Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are an integrated, multi-disciplinary research unit providing bioengineering solutions to urgent societal needs. IBMI scientists develop next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure properties of living systems, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology, medicine, and the environment. The unit comprises 12 inter-disciplinary laboratories with scientists from more than 25 countries, offering state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative research and an ideal environment to accelerate your career.

The successful candidate will work on the development of data analysis pipelines, signal processing and inference methods for optoacoustic data, contributing to the world’s first portable mid-infrared optoacoustic sensor (MiROS) for non-invasive blood biomarker detection.

Responsibilities

  • Develop data analysis pipelines, signal processing and inference methods for optoacoustic data.
  • Bridge measurement physics and biomarker estimation: transform raw optoacoustic signals into robust, quantitative readouts.
  • Define performance metrics and validate results experimentally, helping to translate laboratory-scale prototypes into a compact, portable system.

Your Profile / Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering, physics, computational science, medical technology, biomedical computing, natural sciences, or related discipline.
  • Excellent track record of research achievements and publications in top-ranked journals.
  • Strong motivation, scientific curiosity, and commitment to scientific excellence.
  • Programming experience with Python and good software engineering practices (version control, reproducibility).
  • Proven experience in data analysis / method development for experimental signals (e.g., spectroscopy, ultrasound, optoacoustics, biomedical sensing, imaging).
  • Solid foundations in signal processing and statistics.
  • Experience with machine learning for regression (e.g., tree-based methods, neural networks).
  • Hands-on experimental skills: ability and motivation to work in the lab, run measurement campaigns, and troubleshoot setups during data acquisition.
  • Team player with enthusiasm for multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Excellent command of the English language.

Our Offer

  • 2-year contract with the possibility of extension and a long-term perspective if mutual expectations are met.
  • Salary commensurate with work experience and seniority (TV EntgO Bund EG 13).
  • Opportunity to work in a world-leading research institute at the intersection of bioengineering, biology, medicine, and environmental health.
  • Support for career development, continued education, and professional growth; international exposure through partners and collaborators across Europe and beyond.
  • Stimulating environment with a dynamic, professional team and access to state-of-the-art infrastructure.
  • Commitment to diversity. Applications from talented people regardless of gender, cultural background, nationality, ethnicity, sexual identity, physical abilities, religion, and age are welcome. The position is suitable for filling with severely disabled persons; severely disabled applicants will be given preference when otherwise essentially equal.

Application

We are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive online application, including your letter of motivation, CV, and academic transcripts of records, preferably in English. Please indicate "Postdoctoral fellow in non-invasive optoacoustic sensing" in the subject line.
