Postdoctoral Physicist (m/f/d) for EMC3-Eirene simulations of stellarator boundary physics

We are currently filling two Postdoc positions at IPP, attached to the departments E2 (Garching) and E5 (Greifswald). IPP investigates the design of a new stellarator device, providing a bridge between W7-X and a reactor. The device will feature an island divertor and aim for robust physics studies. Two postdocs will optimize the magnetic equilibrium at the plasma edge and investigate heat transport and plasma physics for different divertor locations and geometries, with frequent collaboration across sites.

Responsibilities

• Optimize target shape and location using EMC3-Eirene simulations, focusing on magnetic equilibrium at the plasma edge.
• Familiarize yourself with the magnetic geometry at the plasma edge of a stellarator.
• Investigate the influence of island internal fieldline pitch, magnetic shear, and island size across the island resonance on divertor performance.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in physics.
• Background in plasma edge physics in magnetically confined devices.
• Experience in modelling and/or magnetic field optimization.
• Experience with data analysis.
• Ability to present scientific results concisely and work in a collaborative environment.

Preferences

• Experience with EMC3 or SOLPS modeling.
• Experience with stellarator boundary physics and/or magnetic topology.

Contract
