In order to fill a fixed-term position in part-time (50% = hours/week) at the earliest possible date, we are looking for 1 postdoctoral researcher (50% until , end of project) in Neuro-Cybersecurity and Secure Neurotechnology (m/f/d).

Postdoctoral Researcher (50 %; until , end of project): Neuro-Cybersecurity and Secure Neurotechnology (m/f/d)

Led by Professor Christian Klaes, the KlaesLab specializes in exploring the intersection between biological and artificial systems. Professor Klaes holds the professorship for neurotechnology at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and is an expert in human and monkey brain-computer interfaces, both invasive and non-invasive. Currently, the lab is focused on using state-of-the-art machine learning approaches for brain-machine interfaces to control devices, developing advanced neural analysis methods to control human hand exoskeletons, and conducting virtual reality research using VR, EEG, and invasive neural recordings from humans. The lab has a broad network of collaborations within Ruhr-University Bochum, as well as with external partners such as Caltech, Ruhr University of Applied Sciences (Iossifidis Lab), German Primate Center, University of Madeira, Snap GmbH, and many others.

The postdoctoral researcher will play a central scientific role in the KlaesLab subproject, bridging experimental neurotechnology and cybersecurity-oriented research. The position combines independent research, conceptual integration, and scientific coordination.

Your tasks:

  • Scientific coordination of the KlaesLab contributions to BrainGuard
  • Development of threat models and security concepts for neurotechnological systems
  • Methodological supervision of PhD projects on EEG-based authentication and neural data decoding and privacy risks
  • Integration of experimental findings into broader neuro-cybersecurity frameworks
  • Close collaboration with project partners in cybersecurity, cryptography, and embedded systems
  • Publication of results in high-impact international journals and conferences

Your profile:

  • PhD in Neuroscience, Neuroengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field
  • Strong background in neural data analysis, brain–machine interfaces, or computational neuroscience
  • Demonstrated interest in security, privacy, or trustworthy AI in sensitive systems
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research and scientific project coordination
  • Very good command of English

We offer:

  • Challenging and varied tasks with a high level of independence
  • Options for flexible working (mobile working and teleworking)
  • Collaboration in a committed and appreciative team
  • A varied sports program with around 100 sport disciplines and the university's own gym
  • A highly interdisciplinary and intellectually stimulating research environment
  • The opportunity to shape an emerging research field at the intersection of neurotechnology and cybersecurity
  • Excellent conditions for scientific visibility, networking, and career development
